The Convention Bureau at Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB) has been voted one of the best in the world by readers of an influential meetings magazine in the United States.
Readers of Successful Meetings named Glasgow among only 16 leading Convention and Visitor Bureaux outside of the US in their annual Pinnacle awards. No other visitor or convention bureau in the UK received the accolade, with Successful Meetings readers ranking Glasgow alongside places such as Barcelona, the German Convention Bureau, Paris and the Singapore Tourism Board.
Vince Alonzo, editor in chief of Successful Meetings, said: “With all of the hospitality choices that meeting and event planners have these days, any destination that wins a Pinnacle Award is obviously in the highest tier of quality in the hospitality field.
"And the best part is that it is planners themselves who are making this distinction, thus giving a credible stamp of approval that others can use when deciding where to host a meeting, incentive, convention, or trade show."
Molly Doheny, Head of the Convention Bureau at GCMB, said: “We are absolutely delighted to win this highly prestigious award, which is a ringing endorsement from our North American clients.
“With the extremely favourable exchange rates at the moment, there has never been a better time for meeting planners from North America and Europe to book business in Glasgow.
“Glasgow is forging full steam ahead with an exciting range of new infrastructure developments which will make the city an even more attractive destination for meeting planners.”
Continental Airlines runs daily year-round services from Glasgow to New York, and US Airways runs daily services between the cities from May to September.
The Pinnacle Award is the latest in a string of high-profile accolades won by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau. This year, Glasgow was voted the UK’s Best Convention Bureau for the third year running by readers of Meetings + Incentive Travel. Latest figures from the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) show that in 2008, Glasgow was the UK’s international conference capital, attracting more international delegates than any other British city.
