Another World First for Glasgow as Scottish City Launches its own Internet Television Channel

Narrowstep, the TV on the Internet Company, will launch www.Glasgow.TV - the world’s first broadband City TV channel at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) in Las Vegas on Tuesday 19 April.

Glasgow.tv has been created to showcase Glasgow as an international destination of choice. The Channel will broadcast events from the city, carry advertising for business and act as an information source for overseas visitors and ex-pats.

Glasgow.tv is being funded by Glasgow City Council to maximise promotional opportunities afforded by the Broadband revolution and has been developed by Narrowstep, the world’s leading creator of Broadband TV channels.

Glasgow.tv will be available on Broadband to approximately 817 million homes throughout the world – or 12.7% of its global population - and will be online at www.glasgow.tv from Tuesday 27th April.

As well as broadcasting coverage of the city’s major sporting events and annual festivals such as the Fresh ‘n’ Lo Great Scottish Run, Redbull Railstorm in George Square and the World Pipe Band Championships, the channel will also screen the film produced for the launch of the new city branding campaign, Glasgow: Scotland with style.

Councillor Alex Mosson, who is Glasgow City Council’s Spokesperson on City Marketing and Events and Chairman of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, commented:

“Having a dedicated internet television station for Glasgow will allow us to screen major sporting fixtures taking place in the city to a global audience as well as showcase our international event management credentials through this cutting-edge technology.

“At the same time, Glasgow.tv will give also viewers a taste of what the city has to offer potential visitors and enhance our drive for tourism.”

Narrowstep’s CEO Iolo Jones said, “Just this week at NAB, Narrowstep have commenced licensing of their core operating system, TelVOS™ which is the basis for Narrowstep’s highly popular TV Station in a Box and is the underlying Operating System for Glasgow.TV and products such as CityTV, GovTV and EmployeeTV.  We see this as the start of something big. This year Glasgow.TV, next, who knows, maybe a LosAngeles.TV or a NewYork.TV

The unique advantage of Narrowstep’s Broadband TV Operating System is that there is no progressive download but rather a one-to-one continuous delivery, ensuring the viewer can watch the channel immediately.

In addition, the quality offered by this system is what one would expect from a top of the range television set with screen size ranging from ‘mini-mode’ (the channel can be playing while you continue to work on your computer) to full screen capability.
