New Chair and Vice-Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau Announced

The Leader of Glasgow City Council, Councillor Steven Purcell, is the new Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, with Bailie Liz Cameron supporting him as Vice-Chair.
 
The decision underlines the importance of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau to the Council’s aspirations for the city over the next ten years.  The city brand Glasgow: Scotland with style features in both Glasgow’s Ten Year Economic Development Strategy and the Glasgow Tourism Strategy for 2007 – 2016.  
 
Funded by Glasgow City Council with contributions from the private sector, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau has 40 staff engaged in national and international activity comprising:
 
  • Development and implementation of the city branding campaign: Glasgow: Scotland with style
  • Conventions, incentives, meetings and exhibition sales
  • Event creation, attraction, management and marketing  
  • Conference and event accommodation bookings
  • Public Relations
  • Development of the website: www.seeglasgow.com for the Metropolitan area
 
Speaking after his appointment Councillor Purcell, said:
 
“The work undertaken by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau since it was first established two years ago has been tremendous.  The achievements of the brand Glasgow: Scotland with style speak for themselves, and events and conventions attracted and managed by the Bureau are generating economic impact that has impressed Council officials and private investors alike.
 
“I would like to pay tribute to the previous Chair, Alex Mosson, and the Board of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau for their stewardship of the Bureau through challenging but exciting times.  In the highly competitive global marketplace, it is important that Glasgow has a strong identity and in Glasgow City Marketing Bureau the city has an equally strong place marketing agency.
 
“I look forward to working with the team at Glasgow City Marketing Bureau to build on their achievements to date, which will ultimately help make Glasgow a better place for Glaswegians and will position Glasgow as one of the foremost centres for contemporary culture in Europe.”

  1. Following the reorganisation of Scottish tourism, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau was established on 1 April 2005.  The agency is headed up by Chief Executive, Scott Taylor, and undertakes a raft of separate but complementary responsibilities to that of the VisitScotland Glasgow network office.
  2. Glasgow: Scotland with style was launched in March 2004 and has a budget of £4.4 million – £2 million coming from Glasgow City Council and £1.8 million from the European Regional Development Fund through the 2000 – 2006 Western Scotland Objective 2.  The balance comes from Glasgow City Marketing Bureau’s core budget.
  3. Since Glasgow: Scotland with style was launched in March 2004, 359,769 additional visitors have been attracted to metropolitan Glasgow, generating £41.7 million for the local economy.
