Thousands descended on the River Clyde at the weekend as the Glasgow River Festival again proved a summer success.
Now in its sixth year, the event has become a popular mainstay in the city’s event calendar and this year 90,000 people turned up to take part in the fun, based in and around the Glasgow Harbour, the SECC and the Glasgow Science Centre.
Highlights included live pirate action – explosive action featuring cannons, muskets and two impressive pirate ships - and thrilling jet ski demonstrations by Four Time World Freestyle Jet-Ski Champion, Lee Stone.
Other highlights of an action-packed weekend on the river included powerboat rides, an appearance by Navy mine hunter warship HMS Blyth, and cruises down the Clyde on the Waverley, the world’s last ocean-going paddle steamer.
The fun was no less exciting on land, with local bands playing throughout Saturday and Sunday and live science experiments with BBC’s Bang Goes the Theory roadshow.
The weekend’s action finished with a Duck Race, as 20,000 toy ducks took to the Clyde in support of Marie Curie Cancer Care.
The Lord Provost Bob Winter said: “The River Clyde has been – and continues to be – an important feature of Glasgow life and the Glasgow River Festival has once again proved a great way to celebrate its heritage”
“I’m delighted that so many people turned up at the weekend for what was a spectacular two days of entertainment.”
Following the success of the Glasgow River Festival, the Glasgow Show completes the Festival fortnight with entertainment and events at Glasgow Green next Saturday and Sunday.
