‘TWO CLYDES TO EVERY STORY’ RIVER TRIPS

Sightseeing trips on the River Clyde are the latest part of a major drive to attract thousands of visitors to experience Clyde Waterfront’s regeneration and heritage.

Running until 30th August, The MV Cruiser offers daily cruises, taking in the Clyde’s best known attractions, old and new.

Operated by Clyde Marine Services Ltd, the two and a half hour round trip departs each day at 1300hrs from the SECC pontoon, beside the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Glasgow. There are stops at Braehead for those who want to visit the Clydebuilt Museum and at Clydebank (4 days per week) for the Titan Crane visitor attraction.  Return fares for the boat trip are £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.

The vessel can accommodate up to 125 passengers, who get an informative commentary and a view from the water of the many developments that are transforming the Clyde. This includes the Clyde Arc, Glasgow Science Centre, the Digital Media Quarter, the Riverside Museum, Glasgow Harbour, Braehead, Xscape, Ferry Village and Queens Quay at Clydebank.

Hamish Munro, Clyde Marine Services Ltd said, “Whether you’re visiting the Clyde for the first time, returning as a visitor to Scotland after years abroad or a local looking for a trip close to home, this short sightseeing cruise is not only fun but educational and informative.”

Tickets can be purchased on board and more information is available on 01475 721281 or at www.clydecruises.com.

The sightseeing tours are sponsored by Clyde Waterfront, the public sector partnership established to support the River Clyde’s revitalisation as a world class waterfront location.

Earlier this year, the Clyde Waterfront Partnership published a special Heritage Guide, which, together with a supporting promotional campaign, ‘Two Clydes to Every Story’, aims to boost visitors to the Clyde.

The Guide offers twelve areas to explore along a thirteen mile stretch of the Clyde and more than 65 visitor attractions and sites of interest are listed including the People’s Palace, the Clydeport building, the Waverley, the Tall Ship, Xscape at Braehead, India of Inchinnan,  Bowling Harbour and Dumbarton Rock and Castle. The Guide can be accessed at www.clydewaterfrontheritage.com

Speaking on behalf of the Clyde Waterfront Partnership, Liz Connolly, Clyde Waterfront board member said, “In the year of Homecoming Scotland, we believe there is huge potential to increase visitor numbers to the Clyde, including those Scots who emigrated years ago coming home to witness the transformation taking place on the banks of the Clyde”.

The Clyde Waterfront strategic partners are the Scottish Government, Scottish Enterprise and the local authorities for Glasgow City, Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire.

Plans to transform the environment, local communities, transport infrastructure and economy along 13 miles of the river from Glasgow to Dumbarton make Clyde Waterfront the largest project of its kind in Scotland.

The £5-6 billion of planned public and private sector investment, which is projected over a 25 year period, has the potential to deliver,
·         50,000 gross new jobs
·         24,000 new homes
·         900,000m2 of office, retail, industrial and leisure space

Currently, the Clyde Waterfront regeneration plan has a diverse range of over 200 commercial, housing, retail, leisure and transport projects, all at different stages of development (appx. one third in planning; one third under construction and one third completed.)

These include many new private sector offices, retail/leisure premises and housing projects under construction in the City Centre/IFSD, at the Digital Media Quarter/Pacific Quay, Glasgow Harbour, Renfrew Riverside and Dumbarton. These developments are complemented by major public projects such as the £445m M74 extension, new £125m SECC National Arena, £74m Riverside Museum, the £13m Partick Interchange and the £842m expansion of the Southern General Hospital.
